How Often Should You Wash Your Comforter?

The general rule

For most households, washing a comforter every two to three months is reasonable if you use a duvet cover, since the cover takes most of the direct contact. If you sleep directly under the comforter without a cover, or you have pets on the bed, aim for closer to once a month. Down and down-alternative comforters can go a bit longer between washes than regular quilted comforters, but they still need attention at the change of seasons.

Signs it's overdue

• Visible discoloration or dinginess, especially near the edges you touch most.
• A musty or stale smell that doesn't air out after a night with the windows open.
• Flattened, clumped filling that no longer puffs back up when you shake it.
• Anyone in the house with allergies or asthma flaring up seasonally.

A queen or king comforter is often too big and too heavy — especially once wet — for a standard home washer to properly agitate and rinse.
