Solvent vs. water: why "dry" cleaning isn't dry

Dry cleaning is called "dry" because it uses little to no water on the fabric — instead, garments are cleaned in a liquid solvent inside a machine that looks a lot like a large front-load washer. The solvent lifts oils, grease and ground-in dirt that plain water and detergent can struggle with, without the swelling, shrinking or color bleeding that hot water can cause in delicate fibers like wool, silk, and structured items like suits and blazers.

That's why dry cleaning is the right call for suits, blouses, ties, certain dresses, and anything with a "dry clean only" tag — the fiber and construction (linings, interfacing, buttons) do better without a water-based wash and dry cycle.

Why on-premises matters

A lot of drop-off dry cleaners are really just collection points that ship garments out to a third-party plant, sometimes miles away, and you never really know who handled your clothes or how long they sat in a van. Need it sooner? Same-day is +30% (in by 10am), and rush is +50%. Our Little Ferry location is a drop-off point for that same neighborhood — garments dropped there travel to Saddle Brook to be cleaned, then come back to Little Ferry for pickup.

What happens to your garment, step by step

1. Intake and tagging. Your garment is inspected, tagged, and checked for stains, loose buttons or damage before anything else happens.
2. Pre-treatment. Visible stains get targeted pre-treatment, since the dry cleaning cycle alone won't always lift everything.
3. The dry cleaning cycle. Garments go into the dry cleaning machine with solvent, which is agitated gently, then filtered and extracted from the fabric.
4. Drying. Garments tumble in a controlled, low-heat cycle to remove the remaining solvent.
5. Inspection. Each piece is checked again for remaining spots or issues before finishing.
6. Pressing and finishing. Garments are pressed or steamed on forms to restore their shape and crease.
7. Packaging and pickup. Finished items go on hangers, bagged, and ready for pickup within 24 hours on our standard, included turnaround — or the same day if you dropped off by 10am and chose the +30% same-day option.
